Geopolymer cement is based on inorganic materials with a polymer structure of molecules. Geopolymer binders and concretes are high-strength and possess a range of specific properties. They are called “geopolymers” because the raw materials used for their production are mainly minerals of geological origin. Geopolymer cement is chemically inert to a range of aggressive substances, and remains sturdy in severe climates. In comparison to traditional concrete production technology based on portland cement, geopolymer is far superior in strength, durability, freeze-thaw resistance, fire resistance, heat insulation, corrosion and aggressive substance resistance, including some types of acids.

In addition, the use of Geopolymer reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%, compared to portland cement production. Geopolymer can also be formulated to actually re-use and recycle industrial byproducts as aggregates.

PORTLAND VS GEOPOLYMER

Portland is the 2nd most used material in the world, only 2nd to water
1 ton Portland equals 1 ton of CO2

PORTLAND:

  • Portland concrete is responsible for 12-15% of the earth’s pollution
  • 80-120 year lifespan
  • Requires water for mixing and cleanup
  • Not waterproof
  • Not fireproof
  • Not acid resistant
  • Low strength, high cost
  • Requires rock & sand aggregates

GEOPOLYMER:

  • Geopolymer is 88%+ more sustainable
  • Old Roman-style concrete
  • 10,000 year lifespan
  • May use recycled or salt water
  • Waterproof
  • Fireproof
  • Acid resistant
  • High strength, low cost
  • Able to utilize a wide array of aggregates and recycled waste

Geopolymer concrete used as a structural mortar in 3-D concrete printing is superior to a Portland-based mortar since the Geopolymer will chemically fuse together, while the Portland based cement will have a tendency to create a cold joint. For these facts Geopolymer is incomparable to any other medium for stability and strength in 3-D printing.
